Who this is for

For travellers who go to a country for its landscape before anything else, and whose idea of a good day is a long walk and then a long sit with something worth looking at. Korea is unusually generous here, and almost none of it is known abroad.

The pace is unhurried on purpose. Mornings are early, afternoons are open, and most of the day is spent outdoors with somewhere comfortable waiting at the end of it.

Six weeks, moving south

For about six weeks a year the whole country turns, beginning on the northern ridges at the end of September and finishing in the palace gardens of Seoul in November. The colour travels south at its own pace and waits for nobody.

So this journey is built to move. We watch the front from September, and the route approved in summer is not quite the route travelled. Being in the right valley in the right week is the entire trip, and it is the part that cannot be arranged from abroad.

What the journey holds

Seoraksan: The most dramatic in the country and the first to turn. The waterfall valleys are the reason to come, more than the summit.
Naejangsan: A wooded bowl that goes almost entirely red, reached through an avenue of maples that is itself the point.
Gyeongju: Thousand year old temple architecture with maple against it, where the season and the history stop competing for the same day.
The Secret Garden at Changdeokgung: The finest autumn inside Seoul, on a timed ticket with a fixed number of visitors. It sells out. Holding it is a large part of what we do.
